PLANT OF THE MONTH: ‘Leonard Messel’ Magnolia

Springtime is all about flowers and fragrance and magnolias offer the best flower power around!

This particular variety has pink star shaped flowers that appear before the foliage in early spring. The blossoms are very fragrant and are sure to attract attention to your spring garden!

Growing Conditions: They prefer to grow in moist, well-drained soil in full sun.

Size: This tree has an upright, oval form, mature size 13’ tall, 18’ spread and can be used as a specimen tree.

Hardiness: Adaptable to zone 5

Where to Plant: This small tree is well suited as a focal point in front yards or backyards.

Plant Partners: Great companions are spring flowering bulbs such as tulips or daffodils, shrubs such as ‘Carol Mackie’ daphne or Korean spice viburnum are great succession plants because they will flower in mid to late spring when the Magnolias are finished.
